WEW! That seems like a basic thing an engineer should look out for and certainly something that should fixed before selling for $500+ in this economy.
I've only heard good things with Audio-Technica, but I already own a set of Sennheiser HD 650, and am about to get an AMP and DAC for. The HD 598 I currently use have been so good for the seven plus years I've owned them for multi-genre listening, even without correct EQ and mixing, which I'm a complete idiot with.
