what i'm insisting on is (more for your readers that for you, you seem to understand most of it just fine): you underestimate the depth of fascisation of russia, and russians. as soon as one myth approaches the «dangerous» point of being «disproven», there's another one, even more attractive to russians because of the hatered i'm talking about. by manipulating this hatered with relatively low effort required, any putin can remain in power indefinitely.
no level of quality of life in ukraine will ever magically «cure» this hatered or leave the current putin without tools to redirect that hatered wherever they need. chechnya, georgia, moldova — this had happened many times even _before_ ukraine!
and still, westerners remain stupidely naïve and believe russia can be gently nudged into democracy, or that replacing one putin with another (navalny, or navalny's wife) will automatically cure the whole nation of fascism.
