My point was not another iteration of German Wandel dur Handel where they hoped Russia will become a normal country be merely making business with other normal countries.

For example, Poland and other former Soviet satellites and USSR republics made huge economic progress, in case of Poland actually overcoming Russia in terms of GDP per capita. Russians have plenty of excuses (“EU gave them money” etc) but in general they don’t care about Poland, because it’s “different”.

But they do care about Ukraine. Please note we enter the zone of Russian perceptions and complexes here, which doesn’t have anything to do with physical reality… but their complexes are still a driver for their actions. So many people in Russia have families in Ukraine and both countries are Orthodox Christian. Unlike Poland, they don’t consider Ukraine to be “foreign” (regardless of the massive cultural differences that Russians choose to ignore).

Therefore any socioeconomic development in Ukraine painfully disproves one of the most important myths of the “Russian world” - that all Russians (including Ukrainians, with the disclaimer above) require a strong hand ruler because they themselves are “unsuitable for democracy”.
