In one sense, City Lights is just a big space filled with books on shelves. If we did redid it somewhere else in North Beach, it might serve the same function - selling books - but would it be too different?
City Lights is a good example - I think it has important historical - and since we are required to be crass and materialistic - touristic, and therefore economic value as it is now, even with that awkward staircase to the basement room.
And the same for Vesuvio's and Spec's on that same block. (Spec's has a crazy, crazy rich San Francisco history.)
