Seriously, though, for many things lost in this way, it's not really true to say "we shall not see their like again."
The I-Beam and the Red Vic movie theatre on Haight Street won't come back in their specific incarnations and locations, but the Red Vic moved once and it was fine. And the I-Beam had a nice big weird indoor space, but we could just build something similar and it would also be fine.
Some things, some specific pieces of architecture and design, when they're gone, they are gone. But venues, maybe less so.
There is, though, something to be said - at least for me - about aura, about history, and a space that has been lived in in certain ways.
