I wonder if, in practice, that only applies to people that aren't already marginalized in some visible way. When I was in elementary school, some of my TVIs (teachers of the visually impaired) tried to get me to suppress or at least moderate some of my nerdier and geekier tendencies (I think I had and still have both, according to your old definitions of nerd and geek). Maybe it was good that I appear normal to the extent that I could.
