There’s a lot of talent in the fedi. Better tooling is a very attainable outcome.
But there is a distinct culture here that will protect bigots even if it means thwarting the natural evolution of decentralized platforms, which is almost identical to the development, or lack there of, of centralized platforms.
The lack of attention to quality tools for moderation and safety is the largest obstacle to decentralized social media becoming the norm.
And in the conversations I’ve had with devs, this is an intentional choice because the unspoken desire for many prominent devs and admins on the fedi is to make the fedi a digital white ethnostate that is only hospitable to certain people.
Remember how loud white admins got about defending yet another white guy building a bridge between the fedi and blue sky that no one asked for? You remember the white rage we say from tech bros who weren’t given the benefit of the doubt just because.
We have *never* seen that same energy when it comes to protecting members of their instances from hate. Ever.
That’s not an accident. There’s a reason larger instances have terrible moderation and these hateful patterns keep happening.
