I’ve been tracking hate communities since my PV days and I can tell you with certainty there aren’t that many. In relation to the size of the fedi, that population is very manageable.
The core of the issue is the unending patience white admins and mods have for bigots in the fedi, many being friends with the most racist people on the web. It’s not that they can’t be moderated but a lot of white folks who run instances simply refuse to.
There’s a reason we have this cycle of the same bad actors launching hate campaign against Black and Brown targets and people acting ‘surprised’ they still have access despite having reputations for awful behavior.
We know where the hate is coming from. People are refusing to act until there is a crisis. That’s not a technology problem. It’s a lack of care for the safety of people trusting mods that are sympathetic to white supremacy despite having all the acronyms in their bios. That’s a culture problem.
