My half-backed (I'm not a biologist) 'theory of the ant mind' is that ants are driven by a few simple emotional states that are deeply social.

Isolated ants have much shorter lives ... even in ideal conditions.

It's almost like they get depressed without the constant stream of interaction from sisters.

This is really strange if you think about it seriously at all. (if you are inclined to view ants as somewhat mechanical which seems to be a pernicious default assumption)
