npub1hpcdfjpxrawnmu6ryh36ce7xu4qd54pu6xca394yhvmyzlery0tqvghjn3 (npub1hpc…hjn3) I guess it depends on why you're using social media - for interpersonal communication (talking with people), to promote something (talking at people), or just passively listening. I don't necessarily want or need "reach" but there are plenty of artists, writers, and activists who do. I've never intentionally used an algorithmic feed (in 2008 Twitter didn't have one) but others prefer it. The one-size-fits-none moderation policy of a large enclosure doesn't work for a lot of users, especially for commercial interests and marginalized groups. I don't have a good solution; it's clear that the VC-funded walled gardens come with a lot of problems but they work for many people. Imperfect as it is, I prefer the balkanized mosaic of the Fediverse where many communities exist and communication among them is possible through technical interoperability. For me the alternatives are dismal but again, not everyone uses social media the same way or for the same reasons I do.
