I love this perspective, I think about this a lot in relation to the fediverse specifically but also other indie web communities like Neocities, Spacehey etc. A wave of mainstream cultural adoption of the internet washed over us, people who share our values were swept up in it for a time. Now, we're picking up the pieces and trying to rebuild what was.
People who boast about how Mastodon is less popular than, say Bluesky, are missing the point. That's a GOOD thing.
