I don't see Apple as getting defensive. They're offering retraining to staff to migrate social media support to phone/text support.
When there's no privacy in DMs on Twitter (and YouTube comments are public) - and Apple doesn't really need a reason to get off Twitter anyway - I think it's reasonable to centralize (and hopefully improve) support in a way that preserves user privacy.
