I think it's overly simplistic to say Reconstruction failed because Southern racists were too cunning. Northern industrialists were happy to exploit and dehumanize black, Chinese, Italian, etc laborers at the same time. It was men in blue Army uniforms perpetrating genocide in the Plains against native peoples. Reconstruction failed because not enough had a will for it to succeed.
