It’s an addictive substance, no mystery, the more you consume the more your body overcompensates for its presence and the more you need to get the same high. The more you take the more the addiction grows. No one has it “under control” so much as they just haven’t had as much as others.

A guy wrote a great article on the loneliness epidemic and that led to a book deal to dig deeper into the solution of making friends, which led to this book. It’s funny and heartbreaking in equal measure. I found it very relatable, and highly recommend for guys getting to middle age.

It’s a book about dispelling the illusions that alcohol does anything good for anybody, it really resolved the cognitive dissonance for me

A great starter cigar is Oliva Connecticut Reserve (not Maduro). Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’ll be too mild, but it’s a great start
The Fuente Chateau is another good starter, and the Fuente 858 is a classic you can find everywhere (with a little more flavor)
The Perla Del Mar Maduro is a great starter Maduro, it’s deceptively dark but actually nice and sweet
I would stay away from My Father until you know what you like, their cigars are all very different, but once you’ve dialed in your taste, they’re sure to make something you’ll like
Romeo Y Julieta is another extremely popular cigar that people like, with a bit more kick than other common cigars
Most important thing is buying cigars that have been well-kept. Too dry (pretty common) or to wet (less common) will ruin the experience
Try a V-Cut when you’re getting started, it helps you learn how deep to cut
I don’t care for Montecristo and I’ve never had a Brickhouse or Maconudo that I have liked
It all comes down to personal taste though, those cigars sell plenty so someone must like them
Don’t be cheap but you don’t need to spend more than $10 if you have someone steering you in the right direction
“The Ultimate Cigar Book” is a great read

I had a group of 4 (smaller high school)
All 4 married, 1 divorced
Kids 2 / 1 / 1 / 0 -> avg 1
1 does well as I understand it, 2 have paycheck to paycheck, 1 stay at home dad
3 own a home, 1 rents (re: divorce)
All but 1 have defriended me over politics and/or downstream personal drama
1 remains ride or die, and I’m grateful
It ain’t what I thought 34 would be, I’ll tell ya that
