Because of the way I am handling communication all files exist as serialized->compressed->encrypted blob identified only by it's blake3 hash. Any info about them is handled by Notifications. Those are single packets of data saying what they are and signing permission to access.
The first use case will be simply communicating with myself. My computers will share notifications of what is available and they can decide whether to transfer the files between them right away or wait till wanted. I'll have to look at caching algorithms to fine-tune where things get stored. I can't just sync and deduplicate since devices may have differing storage capabilities and I'll have to pick what level of redundancy I want. It is very much a work in progress.
At least storing everything with its hash will make deduplication easy. I am just hoping I can get away with fewer than 32 bytes. I have to carefully revisit the security implications. Anything I can save on hash size is a performance win. Premature optimization ftw!

The trouble is that no one wants to join one of their friend's commune and hang out with a bunch of their friend's friends.
I am kind of hoping Heaven solves this somehow. Maybe extra dimensions so everyone's house will simultaneously be in the center of all their separate social groups.

Yes, I think it needs to underlie the data channels we make. If data can only flow between people who know each other then it is very hard for bad data to get in. The cost of rebuilding trust is too high.

I worry about this a lot. I think the size of the circle is dictated by who else you can expect to be in that circle with them. With the automobile it could be anyone.
Cul-de-sacs suck but are desirable because they remove a variable. I want to put roads under ground so kids can have the run of the neighborhood again.

That is a great point. But having something on the tip of your tongue is also one of the most frustrating exercises in thinking. It feels incomplete. I have often wondered, however, if we could develop an internal symbol set that was not constrained by time to speed up thinking. By "constrained by time" I mean that words, being serialized sound pressure levels necessarily take time to utter and thus to think.
Since viseospacial reasoning can happen much faster it gives me hope that it is somewhat possible.
