In theory you can go as many hops as you want.
There is an adjustable parameter called the attenuation factor aF which effectively decreases the importance score by some given fraction with each hop further away from you on the graph. Better than an abrupt cutoff at some arbitrary number of jumps away.

The idea of the orange check is that you pay some sats to the platform, right? Like if he owned Xitter that’s what he’d do. Not sure how to do that on nostr where there is no single dominant platform. I suppose zaps could work, although they’re not verifiable (except for ecash, if you trust the mint?)
Ideally I’d want the ability to synthesize zaps + other forms of social proof into a single score. Which is how #grapevine works.

I find listr useful to view the list itself. It’s easy to scroll down and check who you’re following and who you’re not.
At first we just exported the top 1000 and you’d get a mix of current follows and suggested follows, but then we figured we’d omit current follows so you’d get a fresh feed from high quality pubkeys.
Soon you’ll be able to generate multiple lists. With / without current follows; Grapevine page 1, page 2, etc

I’ve made some changes to the profile listeners in settings - give it a try and see if it works now. You should log out and back in again to clear the redux store. I’ve added some progress indicators to the console to give you an idea of when each step should be finished.

Also, @npub1jlr…ynqn has had the idea of a relay+DVM where the web of trust places some restrictions on what data I may or may not be willing to share (with or without a fee) with which npubs. Whether to keep DVM, relay, and grapevine calculations all separate or whether there is a compelling reason to combine them together, I’m not sure.

I’d love to collaborate with someone in the creation of a service that keeps track of your web of trust, i.e. it monitors follows, mutes, zaps, reactions, etc and processes them in real time into influence scores as calculated using the grapevine protocol. These scores will be stored using events which will probably be too large for most standard relays to want to store. But clients will want to access these scores, either by API or by accessing the relevant events, and use them to stratify content. In theory everyone could run a personal “grapevine relay” that stores these large files, but in practice most users won’t do that. But what they will do is pay for a service that runs one of these specialized relays for them.
I talk about the grapevine in a podcast with hodlbod — I’ll post the link to the podcast below. Or check out brainstorm.ninja, which will calculate these scores (your grapevine) for you. What I haven’t done yet is build the relay to store the scores as some kind of specialized event.
Anyone who knows how to build relays and would like to collaborate on a project like this, hit me up.

Using web of trust, people will be able to submit a multitude of definitions of what qualifies as “good writing.” People like @npub1a2c…w83a will have the opportunity to select or endorse whichever definition they like the best. And then I’ll be able to see a list of “highly rated” movie and TV shows where the ratings come exclusively from people like Lyn who endorse the same definition of good writing that resonates with me.
This is one of many types of applications that motivates me to build what I’m building.
I haven’t watched Blue Eye Samurai yet but pretty sure I’m gonna at some point. 🎥 🍿

Lots of politically charged words end up with two, sometimes almost opposite definitions depending on tribal or political affiliation. People end up talking past each other as a result. Woke is one example. Another example is capitalism. Does capitalism presume central banking? to the right, no. But to the left, yes.
The thing about definitions is that they are determined by social consensus. The “correct” definition is whatever the hell everyone says it is. Which of course begs the question: who counts as “everyone.” From a practical perspective, “everyone” is usually defined as: my people, my community, my tribe.

The DVM could be just a specialized relay. And the “API” could simply create an event (parameterized replaceable) signed by the DVM containing the Influence List (aka “Recommended” List). Alternatively, the user could sign in to the DVM service website and sign the event containing the Recommended List which the client accesses in the normal way.

To be honest, naming these things is important and is not easy. The score itself is used to determine how much influence my algo will give to a user over my attention, in some context. Directly proportional, in fact. And there are several reasons we might want to refrain using influence as if it were a dirty word. But I am always open to suggestions if anyone can think of a better one.

If my friend Alice joins nostr today, and I attest with high confidence that she’s a high quality follow in some niche topic, and I do that bc I want her to have a good experience on nostr, then I have generated one high quality data point. If you are looking for high quality follows in that topic, she will pop up on your list, assuming there is at least one path via follows from you to me on the social graph.

I’ve been thinking about the idea of a “web of trust layer.”
A “layer” is basically a NIP-51 list of pubkeys where you associate each pubkey with a WoT score, like this:
[“p”, <pubkey>, <score>]
The idea is that you can have distinct “layers” with WoT scores that are calculated using distinct algos and can even have distinct data formats. Then different layers can be used for different purposes. One layer might be used to stratify content as is already being implemented by Pablo in #Wikifreedia or by me at brainstorm.ninja. Other layers could be used to supply the weights for doing weighted averages or other calculations. You could even have a system where Layer A is utilized in the determination of Layer B.
I don’t think we’d even need a new NIP for this, since NIP-51 already supports extra data fields (if I recall correctly).

The danger is that nostr could recapitulate too many aspects of legacy social media, in exactly the way you mention. Actively rewarding people bc they are influencers = punishing those who are not influencers. Lots of people don’t want us to recreate that world.

I propose that the ability to curate a simple list in a genuinely decentralized fashion -- no tokens or blockchains, no email or social media or phone number verifications -- should be considered not only the atomic unit but also the fundamental building block of the decentralized web. If we can curate simple lists, then the ability to curate **data structures of arbitrary complexity** will very quickly fall into place.
