Precisely what the baseline GrapeRank score is for!
Now imagine a personalized WoT relay that calculates “red flag” scores based on NIP-56 reports, weighted by GrapeRank scores so you can trust the reports. You decide which reports (nudity, profanity, etc) go on your blacklist. Primal queries your relay via API (WoT DVM) to make sure your blacklist is respected.
Whenever a new category of bad actor pops up, the community can invent a new NIP-56 report tag. You tell your personal relay whether to add that tag to your personal blacklist. Easy peasy.

My current version of Brainstorm runs a router to stream events and has several streams set up by default. I have a toggle button to edit strfry-router.config when your WoT is calculated (including your whitelist) and you’re ready to start streaming kind1 notes and other content.

The message that is signed by the ring signature will be whatever is in the content field.
The fact that we’re using a one-time use throwaway pubkey means that WoT will not be a feasible method to prevent spam. It will therefore be recommended but optional to use something like PoW for spam mitigation. If spam becomes a problem, relays can reject any note with the ring signature tag that does not meet the PoW threshold.
And that’s it. Pretty simple.

Here’s a business model: Personalized Webs of Trust relays. You’ll want to run one as an individual because it will keep track of who you trust and in what context. Running the relay yourself means you’re in full control of the algorithms that calculate your WoT scores. You’ll sync your relay with big relays like primal or damus but also with trusted friend relays which will make the big centralized ones redundant / unnecessary.
The above product is what I’m building now. Calling it Brainstorm. 🧠 ⚡️ It uses strfry under the hood, arguably the powerhouse relay of nostr. I’m keeping negentropy activated so you can sync your Brainstorm relay with trusted friendly Brainstorms quickly and efficiently. Whatever content you care about goes into your relay. Personalized WoT scores are calculated using a variety of methods, including PageRank for noncontextual trust and the much more versatile GrapeRank 🍇 for contextual trust.
You’ll be able to run your own Brainstorm. But as a business model, a service like @npub1fvm…szfu can host your Brainstorm for you.
Imagine if things like Trending content and Recommended Follows are communicated to primal via your Brainstorm. Personalized to the max. No more global feeds!

I’ll probably vibecode DCoNR — Decentralized Curation of NIP-56 Reports — into brainstorm. May or may not do it today. My dev brainstorm relay currently has 14579 kind 1984 events. I figured out the bug with graperank scores (it would sometimes stop iterating too soon) so those are ready to use as the weights in the weighted sums that enable us to filter out spam. I’m rewriting the brainstorm update script now so maybe DCoNR after that.
I’ve never been a streamer but I’ll start publishing the prompts I’m using and how well they worked. We should have a special hashtag for that — how about #nostrVibes ?

The closest I could find to a draft proposal is NIP 404 Ghost Events — seems to me we could make one much more simple than that. A vanilla Ring Signature NIP, nothing else. Maybe a special event kind, or maybe any event kind but with a special tag to indicate that the sig is a ring signature and to specify the list of pubkeys in the ring. The difficulty would be that relays would normally reject these events unless they know to check for valid ring signatures, and that would require a pretty big change in how relays work. And whose pubkey goes in the event pubkey field? Maybe we’d need a throwaway pubkey as the author to act as a wrapper for the ring-signed message.

From the Wikipedia article on ring signatures:
In the original paper, Rivest, Shamir, and Tauman described ring signatures as a way to leak a secret. For instance, a ring signature could be used to provide an anonymous signature from "a high-ranking White House official", without revealing which official signed the message.
I could see this being useful. In some instances, people would feel more comfortable issuing a NIP-56-like report if they could hide behind a ring signature. This would provide an additional source of data that we could feed into a graperank interpretation engine.

I’m imagining that if I call up customer service for some company and tell them I’ve lost access to an account and need them to restore access, I could ask N people in my WoT to attest that I’ve told them in the real world that my request is real, I’m not under duress, etc. This would enable the customer service rep to process requests more efficiently.

You could use a NIP-56, kind 1984 event to report a pubkey using “paid shill” as a custom report type.
Your personalized WoT relay could gather all reports with this type (or similar types), discarding reports authored by pubkeys not in your WoT to mitigate gaming the system. If paid shills becomes a problem that people actually care about, they can start using this system.

Has anybody built any AI tools that pair with a nostr relay, digest all its contents, and act as a single relay search engine?
I’m envisioning a personal WoT relay from which spam has been largely weeded out. You’d have lots of high quality data and you’d need a way to search it. Keyword search with results stratified by various WoT metrics is one way, but maybe AI can help with that.

Information stored in the form of quantum bits (as opposed to classical bits) cannot be copied, according to the QM no-cloning theorem.
Which means a quantum database is effectively a bearer instrument.
If there exists some variation of the idea of PoW that is stored in quantum bits, then it could serve as money. No need for a blockchain.
idk what constitutes work in this scenario, or how it is proven without destroying the information, or whether a suitable Schelling point exists to help answer these questions. Maybe time to read Feynman’s old textbook where he proposes the idea of quantum computation.

The idea is that we have no choice but to use the data that is available to us. We go where the signal is. Different people will have different ideas on that.
Example: if you trust zaps more than anything else, someone (a dev) will need to write a (relatively simple) script that transforms zaps into a format that is ready to be consumed by your GrapeRank calculation engine. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that format resembles an explicit trust attestation; it has a rating, a confidence, and a context. The format that my WoT engine employs may or may not be identical to the format that yours employs.
I’m not sure what you mean by sentiment analysis, but whatever it is, you or some other dev would write a script to consume raw data (nostr events) and spit out data ready to be utilized by GrapeRank. If it’s a good signal then you could share the “interpretation” script with other users.
Hopefully that makes sense … let me know if it doesn’t!

Thought process:
1. Calculate trust using follows and maybe likes which is what legacy tech trained us to do. Plus, the data is plentiful. 🙂
2. But wait; follows and likes do not equal trust!!! 😠
3. Ditch the follows and likes. Explicit trust attestations are the holy grail. 😃
4. But wait! UX will be bad and users are never gonna use them! 😖

5. Calculate trust using any and every piece of data available to us. 🤓
Which is why *interpretation* is an integral piece of the GrapeRank algo. No matter what data source you want to use, transform it (interpret it) into a format ready to be digested by the GrapeRank algo, a process that is 💯 under your control.

I’m using neo4j because it’s the most mature FOSS graph database that I’m aware of. It has an enterprise edition that funds its development, but the community edition is enough for my purposes.

An example of something the FOSS graph database #neo4j makes super easy: calculation of the minimum number of hops it takes to get from a reference pubkey to any other pubkey. This can be used in a personalized grapevine WoT relay where neo4j maintains a graph of NostrUser nodes connected by FOLLOWS relationships, and the reference pubkey is YOU (you are always at the center of your grapevine!)
You only need 3 cypher commands:
MATCH (u:NostrUser) SET u.hops=999
MATCH (u:NostrUser {pubkey:'<reference pubkey>'}) SET u.hops=0
MATCH (u1:NostrUser)-[:FOLLOWS]->(u2:NostrUser) WHERE u2.hops - u1.hops > 1 SET u2.hops = u1.hops + 1
The third command repeats until no more nodes get updated, typically around 7 or 8 iterations. Each iteration typically takes well under one second.

My site currently generates personalized PageRank and GrapeRank scores in @npub1gcx…nj5z's NIP-85 format. The export function hasn’t been stress tested yet by more than a handful of users, but @npub1xdt…ntxy has also generated PageRank scores using NIP-85, which means we’re (hopefully) soon going to start seeing clients put these scores to good use.
The question is which client is going to be the first!

We have all grown accustomed to the idea of global reputation scores. But I think we will see — are already seeing in nostr — a change in focus and mindset from global to personalized WoT scores. Your npub doesn’t have a personalized WoT score until you specify the observer npub. You have to ask: what is your npub’s score, as calculated from some other npub’s perspective.
Ultimately, the access to sophisticated, contextual, provable, personalized WoT scores is going to unlock value in ways that we’ve never experienced or perhaps even imagined.

Right now I’m working on a personalized WoT relay that will use these methods to determine your WoT, which means you won’t need a service to do it for you.
My progress so far:
✅ strfry and neo4j on single server
✅ bash script to load events from strfry to neo4j
✅ strfry plugin whitelist and blacklist
✅ personalized PageRank and GrapeRank calculations, both with the assistance of neo4j
✅ bash script to query neo4j and export json files of pubkeys which can be read by strfry plugin and used as whitelists and blacklists
Current hurdles:
- automate the transfer of data from strfry to neo4j to handle streaming data
Once I put together all the above puzzle pieces, my plan will be to write a document so anyone can set up their own personalized WoT relay.
And if all goes well, maybe the above features will make their way into @npub1fvm…szfu ! 😃

I just want to toss out a crazy idea: a personalized WoT relay that supports a sufficiently advanced nostr knowledge graph (NKG) could someday have the unexpected side benefit of shedding light on some big questions in cognitive neuroscience.
Why? Because a NKG and a brain share the same fundamental challenge: decentralized social consensus over questions of semantics, content, facts, information.
What’s up with spontaneous brain activity? The brain is always churning away at something. But on what, precisely? Is it conceivable that a Nostr Knowledge Graph might also require continuous background processing, and for the same or similar reasons?
If I can motivate any academic teams to contribute to construction of a FOSS Nostr Knowledge Graph, with application of those tools to personalized WoT relays, that will make me happy.

Let me see if I understand the demo in your video. You requested a list of Odell’s followers and you ranked them according to personalized PageRank using franzap’s pubkey as the source node (source = the specific node in the graph from which pPR calculation is initiated). The results came back very quickly. Is this because you precomputed franzap’s personalized PageRank? For me that takes about 15 seconds because the graph is very large, approximately 170,000 pubkeys extending out 7 or 8 hops and involving millions of follows. Or did you restrict the graph to be only Odell’s followers? Which would have fewer nodes, fewer edges and calculate much faster.

I found export of data via NIP-85 to be surprisingly fast and easy. I thought it would take longer to publish that many notes. You can test it at https://grapevine-brainstorm.vercel.app/. Just make sure you don’t publish the kind 3038x notes indiscriminately - relays will probably hate you.

I can def see that. I’m planning to look into the DVM spec and possibly using it as a mechanism to access some of the grapevine server’s endpoints.
I’ve been thinking about how clients could put NIP-85 to best use. Perhaps: if you can locate 10040 for the end user, use those scores. If not, each client could have its own default set of scores. Personalized WoT scores if they’re available; if not, default to “global” scores, where global means from the perspective of the client dev. This would allow us to bootstrap the WoT service from scratch, since most users will not have generated NIP-85 scores until it catches on.

Here’s one way it could play out: either third party services or personalized WoT relays create a big picture snapshot, with generic-ish trust scores for a huge number of pubkeys. This will require lots of raw data and lots of compute. So these are the scores that are in greatest need for recalculation and storage.
Next, we have trust scores that are highly contextual. The opposite of generic-ish. Like who are the experts in some narrow topic. These scores require less raw data, less compute and involve fewer pubkeys. So perhaps specialized apps could handle these calculations. The generic-ish trust scores could be accessed and used as filters so that the raw data used for contextual scores is not polluted by spam.
So two ends of a spectrum: generic trust scores calculated ahead of time with results made accessible for lots of purposes; versus highly contextual, specific trust scores that could be handled on the fly.

It’s not gonna be one size fits all. I look forward to seeing the DVM specs!
It is a lot of data. But the question is this: do we calculate WoT scores on the fly just when we need them? Or ahead of time? Right now, we’re trying to do all of them on the fly. I think that’s great for some use cases, but it places severe limitations on what we can accomplish. If we want the notion of WoT to mature, some calculations are simply gonna have to be done ahead of time.
Per NIP-85: there is one event which holds multiple personalized WoT scores (I export GrapeRank, PageRank, & hops, with more scores to be added later) per pubkey. So that’s one event with multiple WoT scores, all concerning Alice, from the perspective of Bob. (“Personalized” means from the perspective of Bob, as opposed to “global” which really just means from the perspective of a big centralized entity like Google.)
We can have third party services to generate and store these events. Right now my app exports these events to my relay. But my vision is personalized WoT relays where Bob will store all of the events that are calculated from his perspective. NIP-85 provides a way for Bob to tell clients where to look for any given WoT score (kind 10040 notes), which can be a personalized WoT relay, a third party service, wherever.
So I see this as basic division of labor. Let each app do what it does best without also necessarily having to provide a complete WoT solution from scratch all by itself.

Best way to load a lot of data into neo4j is with a csv file. So alongside LMDB perhaps I should maintain blocks of csv files with eventId,created_at,author,kind as the header.
I’ll maintain a websocket connection to strfry and load new events into neo4j one at a time as they come in. But events will get missed, so I’ll use systemd to set up a service which will routinely take the latest batch of events as csv and make sure they’ve been loaded into neo4j. Older cvs files can get deleted once I’ve ensured they’re in neo4j.
Then have separate scripts to tend to the relationships: eventA is a reaction to eventB, eventC is a reply to eventD, etc.

Phase 1: Bare bones ETL (extract, transform, load) pipeline from LMDB to neo4j. Something that can be readily paired with most major nostr relays.
Keep it as simple as possible. One node type:NostrEvents, with properties: eventId, created_at, author.
Phase 2: scripts which extract event data and transform the graph into a bona fide Knowledge Graph. Add node types: NostrUser, NostrRelay, and others. Keep relationships updated as new NostrEvents get added.

It seems to me that one way to conceptualize online content is to divide it into durable vs ephemeral. Not completely isolated categories; more like two ends of a spectrum.
Nostr, as well as legacy social media like Twitter, are concerned primarily with ephemeral content. You’re on social media bc you want to have conversations with other users. Which means you’re a lot more interested in content that is new than content that is old. Which is why nostr feeds tend to be displayed in reverse chronological order.
But content that is “durable” is content that doesn’t automatically lose its value just because it’s aged. When you’re searching for durable content, you don’t want to see the results put in reverse chronological order, you want them sorted using some other metric.
Does nostr have a search engine that sorts results by relevance or importance rather than by age?

Interesting. Worth looking into. I don’t see fast PageRank in the neo4j library but maybe it’s just hidden. And we’d have to examine it closely and ask whether the fast algo is more susceptible to being gamed by bad actors.
And a third option: instead of calculating standard PageRank from scratch each time, use previous PageRank scores and iterate from there with updated data.

I want to see if I’m following something correctly.
During the discussion, the point was made that when one shuts down a traditional (Unix) computer, it needs to be put into a state such that it can be shut down safely. Open apps need to be closed, etc. In other words: it is a state machine, and each state belongs to one of two categories: safe-to-shut-down and unsafe-to-shut-down.
The product you’re building at vaporware is also a state machine, and one of its most important attributes is that every possible state belongs to the safe-to-shut-down category.
Would that be a fair statement?

The GrapeRank algorithm is kinda like PageRank, except that the PageRank score has no upper limit, whereas GrapeRank produces a score that maxes out at 1. Imagine mapping PageRank from the interval [0, infinity) to the interval [0,1] where it approaches 1 asymptotically.
The advantage of the Grapevine WoT score is that it is ideally suited to be used as a weight in calculations like weighted averages or voting. This is not true of the PageRank score.
