That's true, but if the electricity fails and the ram clears then when? Of course you can have the code do two things at once, generate the nsec and then encrypt it to the key of another enclave and send it there as a backup, but then you need that other enclave to exist at the time you push the image. (If you allow informing an enclave of new backup enclaves after the fact via vsock then now the power has leaked outside anyway, that vector is now open.)

Yup, but still what if the ram clears? Or AWS decides to stop your machine for some arcane reason? Meaning you'd still need a way to get the nsec out of there. And if you have to get it out eventually then feels to me like you may as well just start with it outside in the first place, shard it and upload the shards to multiple enclaves, etc. (very expensive). End of the day it does feel like kicking the can to be honest.
For an individual user it's fine, no problem with them knowing their own nsec and keeping it locally while signing from a nitro enclave for convenience. That's all great stuff. It's just that with an company account I can't see any way that isn't kicking the can. Who knows though, sometimes solutions come round and bonk you on the head.

Which changes nothing. If half-penny were in common circulation then it would be the smallest individual unit in common circulation. There's always one (and only one) unit that ticks that box.

If the millisat becomes the smallest individual unit in common circulation the that's what happens. If the currency is called Sats it just becomes a case where Sats isn't the smallest. That's how dollars and penies work.
Zooming out, the key point is what I call the grocery store test. If you can’t price things you'll find in the grocery store in Unit X—and have that pricing be easily parsable by the human brain—then Unit X should NOT be the name of the currency.
The dollar, the pound and the rupee all pass the grocery store test. Therefore they are all workable names for a currency. Bitcion does not pass the grocery store test. You cannot price one can of soup at 0.00001 BTC and another can of soup at 0.0001 BTC and have the brain be able to see that second can is10 times more expensive. Brain isn't wired for such ratio parsing. You have to price everything in Sats and Sats alone.
Every major currency in the world passes the grocery store test (because of how the brain works).
Therefore if we use Sats for the grocery store then the word and symbol for Bitcoin will have no job in that context. They'll gets fired by Sats. Which, if that's what you want, then ok.

Yup the symbol is a big issue. It's somewhat eye-rolling to roll it out to small retail without a generally accepted unicode symbol. And you just know there won't be agreement on one for years and years, if ever.
I also suspect that many Sats advocates here will be a little bummed out 20 years from now when they see just how much the Sats brand has eclipsed the Bitcoin brand for the kids.

What does a Sats future in retail look like?
Ask yourself this, in 10 years what use will there be for the word Bitcoin on menus? On receipts? On store signs? On catalogs? On e-commerce sites?
The word Sats can do everything. Calling them "Bitcoin Sats" is redundant. Showing a price in both units—X Sats and also 0.00000X BTC —is a waste of space, not to mention the ugly and human-brain un-parsable mess of zeros. Small businesses don't waste space. Space is money. Prices will be shown in Sats alone.
If you believe in proof of work, and you apply that to words, then the word Bitcoin in these retail contexts isn't doing any work. It's not clarifying anything. It’s not adding any meaning. Semantically, it’s a complete waste of space. At best it's a branding crutch, and one that'll last but a few years. until the word Sats stands alone.
The word (or symbol for) dollar is not a waste of space in these contexts. It’s doing a job. It’s telling you how much the thing is in a way that your human brain can parse. This can of soup is one dollar and fifty cents. So comparing Bitcoin and Sats to Dollars and Cents is (usually) purposefully misleading. Nothing in the supermarket will be priced at one Bitcoin and whatever number of Sats.
The word Bitcoin will remain in use in trading contexts, primarily. But small retail, sorry, no proof of work. Humans weed out words not doing anything. It takes years but it happens. We weeded the word "sterling" out of "pound sterling" after it stopped providing the semantic value that it once did.
If people who are in favour of Sats come out and say they're cool with the word Bitcoin having no job at all in future retail contexts then that’s cool. But that is the thing to acknowledge. And in 20 years there will be people saying: "I kinda miss when we called it Bitcoin. Now it seems like everywhere it's all just Sats. My niece, you know, she doesn't even know what Bitcoin is."

We're testing a secure enclave on Alibaba Cloud in Singapore, ping is 50-100ms. Testing AWS in Sing next. (Alibaba's enclave is basically a copy-paste of AWS, but their networking for SEA is very good.)

I'm not a bitcoin person, but I kind of get the logic there.
If you had two stashes, one of money that was going to be worth more in the future and one of money that was going to be worth less in the future, wouldn't you take from the stash that was going to be worth less to spend on household things?
I guess you could spend the money that was going to be worth less to buy some money that was going to be worth more, and then immediately spend the money that was going to be worth more (before it *is* worth more) on household things—but then isn't that just adding steps and fees?

The identity stuff is hard to fit into a soundbyte. But I think it's still worthwhile keeping up on other protocols.
To unpack atproto identity, the ultimate authority for identity for most people is did:plc, and the ultimate authority for did:plc is the self-signed and self-certifying operation log for each individual did. (There’s also did:web—but fiatjaf is right that that's like 100 or 200 weirdos.)
The complaint against Bluesky is a directory complaint, specifically that they operate plc.directory, and that did:plc IDs need a lookup with a that particular Bluesky-owned server.
That’s true to a degree, plc.directory is the largest and most used directory. To keep it honest people have set up mirrors and live replicas, and there can be active-active cross-replication, write-through, etc., but no getting around the fact plc.directory is the big fish.
But zooming out, it’s, well, a directory. You need a directory, you don’t necessarily need that directory (or a single directory, as consensus from multiple directories also works). So the nuance is that the identity issue is a directory issue and not an underlining identifier issue.
But most of that is besides the point. They’ve recently publicly confirmed plc.directory itself is moving to an independent org soon (some say ICANN, some say elsewhere) and it’ll also likely be grouped with other directories as part of a a consensus mechanism. We have to wait for that, but I'd be very surprised if it didn't.
There are already 'outside of bluesky' implementations of relays, appviews, clients, etc. Once plc.directory moves out then these will be 100% outside of any control of Bluesky PBC. And there are thousands of independent PDSs, with their own keys. (Could be in a few months that the number of atproto users part of an infrastructure chain fully independent of Bluesky is higher than the number of nostr users.)
Then the only control argument after that is that it's bad to have to trust ICANN or whatever org holds plc.directory (or it's bad to trust the consensus mechanism, which is even more unlikely to suffer from tampering.) Given that nostr (unlike Pubky) relies quite heavily on DNS itself, nostr arguments against ICANN would be a little much.
Anyway for nostr it's worth being on top of these things because it helps you figure out where nostr is truly unique and where it's not. And then go hard where it is unique. And it prevents red-faced things from happening, like back when Primal announced how Primal offered far more algorithmic choice than Bluesky, having no idea what Bluesky actually offered in that department at the time (a lot more).

There are many scorecards we could draft up on which nostr gets an undeniably higher score than the others. But then it's back to the nos-Fermi paradox of Where Is Everyone?
There are a few common ways I see the nos-Fermi paradox explained—or glossed over. Someone says "nostr's great", you ask "well were are the people then?" the answer you'll get might be:
-We don't talk about that here
-Nostr band's stats are a lie (spoiler, they're not)
-It's just a bootstrapping issue
-It's just a marketing issue
-Nostr is destined by the heavens to follow the trajectory of Bitcoin (and definitely not destined to follow the trajectory of anything else) so let's all just sit back and watch destiny unfold
-Nostr doesn't need users (i see)
-All protocols have build phases and growth phases, we're in a build phase now.
-This is a 20 year mission and we're only in year 3
-An event will soon occur that results in an influx (though unclear why no events of the past year have been influx-triggering in this way)
Whatever the answer is, while all these fediverse and Bluesky and X scandals are going on nostr's growth remains flat. (The absolutes from nostr band stats might have some question marks around them, but the 6 month trend-line should be useful.)
My take is that it's a use case issue and that nostr has more immediate growth potential in the business world than in the town-square world. I'm guessing your take is that it's in fact a marketing issue? Which if so I could see as legit—it's true that there is a lot of stuff inside nostr that would be of interest to a lot of people outside nostr if they knew about it.

For what it's worth I see this as a decent argument, given that indexing the open part of nostr isn't all that hard (versus the highly-unstructured web) and tools for collaborative indexing are maturing. But it does rely on others joining the party.

Doing a historical dive into the Primal server caching debate, which just as a pure topology debate is quite interesting. The note from @nprofile…97yv below is from over two years ago.
One thing that hasn't come to pass is most clients using server caching and this both keeping everyone honest and providing multiple nostr backups. There are bits and pieces, Ditto perhaps going the farthest, but what hasn't' happened is a two-level nostr where on the read side pretty much all larger clients tap into either their own cache relay or one provided by a third party.
Would this have been a good thing? Why didn't it happen? I think these are really interesting questions.

Sure, my point is that Sats is the only word kids (or anyone else) will learn. There will be no need to learn any other word. This is the same as in countries like Vietnam where you have just one quantum currency unit, and everything is expressed as a value of that. Kids in Vietnam don't learn any other word to express currency besides Dong. Everything is just a number of Dong, a small number or a big number. Sats will be used the way Dong is used in Vietnam—for absolutely everything. The word Bitcoin, will have no classificatory value and will thus fade out of all usage. Just like there is no separate word in Vietnam for 100 million dong. It's just 100 million dong.
Many countries are like this, I'm just using Vietnam as an example. In all countries that have multiple tiered units in use (dollars + cents) this is because the highest unit still has relevance in day to day life. A dollar is something you can price a sandwich in. 100,000 dollars is not, hence we don't have a separate word for 100,000 dollars.

Yeah at first I was thinking discovery of endpoints for identity, for which it's pretty hard to disagree that PKDNS is a step up over free-floating metadata events. For nostr at this point I wonder how painful processing a list of carefully selected breaking changes (encryption type included) would be? Even just changing encryption and maybe transport, and leaving most everything else the same. My gut says nostr would bounce back pretty quick, given that so much of nostr a this point is nostr enthusiasts. Of course if it didn't bounce back that'd be a big "D'oh!" moment.
The other discovery seems like a problem that if you *genuinely* have it that's a good sign!

One is a shared ID that brings frontline workers into the fold—those that would not be given seats in Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, etc., so no AD or Google Cloud Identity, ldap, oath, etc. Using nostr ID as a means to achieve a lowest common denominator identity as foundation for casual comms for everyone, including front-line and vendor workers.
Another is cross company and cross-department intranet. Basically certain things that you'd get with platforms like:

And simple enough that the IT team can feel confident enough to take things in house (json on relays about is easy as it gets). Revenue model is like an SI, pay for support, not for seats.

Relays choose which PDSs to index. I think there's some way for independent PDSs to send an HTTP request to a specific relay and be like "yo pls index me" but I don't know if it's roadmap or live. Anyway the relay could always ignore that.
For pushing nostr content into Bluesky, something tells me the Bluesky team trusts Bridgy Fed more than Alex Gleason Inc.
I guess if Alex made his own AppView and spun up one of these budget relays he could use that AppView to hydrate whatever content and relationships from whatever PDSs he wanted (bsky.app hosted or nostr bridged/programatically controlled) and keep track of timelines and all. But then you'd need his client to see the combined universe. And PDSs would be outside hosted.
On the topic of Bridgy Fed though, here's the Bridgy Fed guy's talk from the ATProto conference a few weeks back. I think he likes nostr, cause at the end of the talk he talks up nostr as some sort of destination where things are converging or something. Watch to the end. Maybe he's a sleeper agent for you.

But yeah, I'm with you mostly on the relays and also the good work Jumble has done to help visualise what's possible there.
I still think though that the whole thing is mainly a use case issue. Change the use case to B2B and many nostr problems just go away, you no longer need the things nostr doesn't have (like how after linux moved away from consumer desktop OS and towards servers it no longer needed a sexy GUI which it couldn't figure out how to make anyway), and with lots of money to be made as SIs, and no grants needed. There's no other use case where the potential income goes up by 10 and the crazy-difficult problems go down by 10.

This is not what will happen though:

This is what will *actually* happen:
- Can you pay me in Sats?
- Sure, how much?

The reason is that 90% of the world will "Come to Bitcoin" by seeing a price-tag in Sats. A breakfast menu with scrambled eggs showing as 3,000 Sat (maybe the world spelled out, since we'll never agree on a symbol). So they won't come to Bitcoin, they'll come to Sats. Sats will be all they'll ever know.
Bitcoin people find it hard to see this because they can't imagine what it's like to be that person who first encounters Bitcoin in any sense from scrambled eggs. They think the fact that Sats are Bitcoin is self-evident (it's not at all).
In this future world of Sats, the word "Bitcoin" has no semantic value. It doesn't describe anything of everyday relevance. It adds no value that the word Sats doesn't already convey. It's pure baggage, and it'll disappear. This is how language always evolves.
And that would be a sad waste and slow down adoption by several years.

My guess is there are only around 300 human beings that are (a) on Nostr in a native sense (b) are posting regularly, and (c) put some thought into making a follow-worthy feed. Of those, almost all are posting about Nostr, Bitcoin or both.
It's just too small of a base to find other content. Think of Nostr like a Facebook group with its own backend.

Only if you have at least 3 separate signers always online. You can outsource that part, but if I have all three of your FROST shards then I have your nsec. So you shouldn't outsource unless you have multiple separate outsource arrangements. Which isn't really any different than setting up your own 3 signers.

I agree that nostr needs more diversity. There are plenty of clients (Jumble is solid) but as for usage Primal seems pretty dominant.
Odell the other day mentioned Primal has 10k daily actives, and nostr.band at that time had around 16k daily trusted pubkeys. Assuming most of the 10k Odell mentioned would be considered trusted pubkeys in nostr.band's accounting then maybe over half of all nostr usage currently comes via Primal? I guess no way to be sure, but that feels about right.
You can sense it with this buzzbot thing. That is very much a byproduct of Primal trending. So Primal's quasi-global view and the features it enables are also influencing nostr culture quite a bit.

If we're imagining a future where nostr is quite big then Country X (it could be one of many) would likely go after the protocol ecosystem in general. But anyway:
1. Request larger app clients remove access to the person in question for users in that country.
2. Request Apple remove Damus and Primal from the App store (assuming neither complies, and assuming other clients like Nostur are far enough off the radar)
3. Request Google remove Amethyst and Primal from Play (same assumption)
4. Firewall off domains of the top10 or 20 relays (even 5 would likely cause enough chaos, assuming the degree of relay clumping in this imaginary future is as high as it is now.)
5. If wanting to go the extra mile ask relay domain extension companies to revoke domain ownership for TOS violations (they're sure to find *something*), and for a few larger relay domains. For example .mom, .lol, .band, .wine... these domains are all administered by private companies that have their own terms on top of ICANN's, and if you read those terms you'll see what I mean. (This is why you've got archive.ph and archive.md and not archive.mom or archive.lol -- certain cctlds are less proactive).
6. Firewall off access to Nostr.build and any other large media host.
7. Contact any third-party CDN being used by larger media hosts (Akamai, Fastly, etc.) with similar stop-serving-for-this-geo requests
8. Firewall off access to web domains of popular web clients.
9. Whatever else is needed.
Or in whatever other order. Adjust country by country. How many of these steps would be needed? Maybe just a few would make nostr pretty much unusable for most quite-unquote normal users in the country, and you'd imagine that's often the goal.

Yeah of course it's gold that's viable to extract. As mentioned asteroids are a possible additional source, but to get at the gold in the earth that's not considered viable to extract seems like it would require a leap in physical technology akin to a stark trek molecular transporter (depending on how much of it we're talking). Asteroid mining seems much more viable.

To be clear this is gold that is physically possible to extract from everywhere in the earth— but without some sort of star-trek leap in technology not gold that is there by multiplying the accepted ppm all throughout (which would be ridiculously high, like in the hundreds of billions or trillions)

In that demo you had to manually switch back to aegis -- would it be possible for aegis to drop a notification at that point to bring the user back over?
or is this all solved by having apps support the URL scheme? I guess none do yet?

Yes, this very much confuses me. Many opinions here seem to exist in a quantum superposition of "stack sats" and "spend sats". It seems so obviously logically inconsistent.
The folks that are all in on store of value—the "I'll never zap a single sat" crowd—are at least understandable. While I disagree that Bitcoin will ever come close to gold, at least I get the position they're staking out.
But those that are "store of value" one day and then "day-to-day currency" the next day, I really have no idea what the thinking is.

For discussing certain theories I suppose that's a useful distinction. But for me the assertion that gold will go to 0.000[infinite more zeros]1 seems just as unserious as the assertion that gold will go to 0. Even to assert that the value of gold will approach the value of, say, copper—I can't see how that could happen in the next 100 years.

This deer I think can pull directly from a PDS as a fallback for given instances, so no relay needed, but have to check on that. (Regardless it currently works when tested on VPN, while bsky.app does not.)

How does gold trend to zero? We've already minded like 70-80% of the earth's gold, with pretty high confidence.
Of course asteroid mining could change things, or maybe some large deposit could be found somewhere totally unexpected vis a vis the modelling—though even that wouldn't likely change things by more than a few percent.
So the scarcity part seems pretty legit. And I don't see our race falling out of love with traditional concepts of jewellery anytime soon, to say nothing of gold as an accepted abstract store of value.

Pubky allows you to prove "what's yours" based on the homeserver you control (tied to your ID). This gets around the problem of events forever out there that are signed by you but that didn't in fact come from you, which can happen on nostr if you expose your nsec, leave your laptop around, etc.
