I don’t get what happened to people running non-profit services that they constantly feel the urge to be defensive and overly apologetic whenever something goes wrong.

Folks, you didn’t intent to send these messages. Calm the fuck down. Someone abused your system, you were notified of it and are now stopping the spam. Get over it, it happens.
I got two of those mails and they were nothing but issue notifications filled with about ~50 mentions of random users with Codeberg accounts and most of them where inactive, didn’t have any repos and seem to have just signed up at some point, without doing anything on the platform. This isn’t some targeted harassment campaign. It’s just spam. The title of both issues that sent out the mails contained “NIGGER BALLS” and the body just contained all the mentioned user accounts.

After crawling through all profiles mentioned in the 2 mails I received I see no reason to assume that this was at all targeted at specific developers or projects based on the listed criteria since most profiles are just empty, as already mentioned.
If I had a automated content moderation platform that I was trying to market, I’d trigger some low hanging fruit spam via Tor and then publish an advertorial like this one: https://safelyx.com/blog/what-could-have-prevented-the-codeberg-incident 🌚 (I’m not saying I have any indication that this is what really happened.)
