You give up on the salability and reliability of having a cash balance in order to employ the capital in a productive process, hoping it will generate a profit. The investor sacrifices liquidity of cash and takes on the risk of loss in exchange for a return on investing. There is no investment without risk, as there is always the risk of partial or complete loss of capital."
