Alby Hub just implemented subaccounts! Alby Hub runners can easily run a custodial "Uncle Jim" service and provide instant wallets to new Lightning and Nostr users, and these wallets are powered by the amazing open protocol, Nostr Wallet Connect - which works in all environments, for both custodial and self-custodial wallets.

These Uncle Jim services can be queried from any Nostr app, and wallets with a lightning address and podcasting 2.0 support can be created instantly from a single API call and be plugged into existing apps for instant wallets - Damus, Amethyst, Nostrudel, Stacker News, Habla News, WavLake, Yakihonne, Highlighter, Bringin, BTCPayServer, Coracle, Freerse, Lume, Wherostr, Zappdit, More Speech, Nostter, Nostur, Snort, Yana, Zap.Stream, Alby Extension, Alby Account, Alby Mobile, Vortex, Spring Browser, and more.

Would you run a public Uncle Jim service on your Alby Hub or add instant wallets to your app and help onboard new users to bitcoin, nostr and value 4 value?

27. Prostate cancer:
I've shared this story a couple of times and often I have second thoughts about sharing the story again.
But if my sharing it here can save ONE life, it's worth it., this issue is too important to stay silent about, so I want to raise awareness.

In November 2018, I was diagnosed with stage T2b intermediate prostate cancer. To make matters worse, it was an aggressive form genetically meaning there was a high likelihood of metastasis if I didn't take action.

Hearing the doctor deliver this news was devastating. I was stunned, caught off guard, and I broke down. Given the context of the preceding 18 months, it felt like a knockout blow:

* My mother passed away in June 2017.
* My father passed away in April 2018.
* My uncle (my mom's older brother) passed away in August 2018.

With all the grief I'd been dealing with, my first thought upon receiving the diagnosis was, "Am I next?"

Reflecting on it, I realized I experienced a microcosm of the stages of grief. I initially tried to deny the diagnosis, but there it was, staring me in the face. I got angry and sought a second opinion, hoping the first doctor was wrong. But the facts were undeniable. Facts don't care about your fears. As anyone close to me can tell you, I became deeply depressed. I was no fun to be around during the holidays. But then I realized that wallowing in fear and sadness was hurting me and those around me. I was still scared, but I knew I had to take action.

My wife was instrumental in helping me through this difficult time. I couldn’t have done it without her.

In the weeks following my diagnosis, I consulted with my urologist to devise a plan of action. He strongly recommended surgery over radiation. After doing some research, I understood why: given the aggressive nature of my cancer, radiation would leave a lingering uncertainty about recurrence. And if the cancer returned, I would have no options left. Despite the fear, surgery was the best option. I had to keep reminding myself of one thing:

I was going to have the final word on this cancer. I was determined to remove it by any means necessary and move on with my life. Was I still scared? Absolutely. But the sooner I got treatment, the better.

My urologist referred me to Swedish Urology for treatment, saying, "I'm good, but they're better, and I think you need to see them for treatment." More blood tests and planning ensued throughout December. In January, I met with my surgeon and got on the schedule.

A few months later, I underwent surgery to remove the cancer. If you're curious about the procedure, look up "da Vinci robotic surgery" online. My wife and I had to drive through the final (and worst) snow of the year on the day of the surgery, but everything went as planned. My wife stayed with me during pre-op, chatting with the anesthesiologist and nurses while they completed the final checklists. I wasn't too nervous at first, but seeing her walk away to the waiting area made everything suddenly real. In hindsight, I probably should have taken the valium they offered.

The surgery went well overall, despite a few hiccups that extended my hospital stay by a night. The pain was intense; Oxycodone helped, but I didn't enjoy the hallucinations it caused (like letters on the dry erase board melting down the board), so I minimized its use.

My wife never left my side, sleeping on an uncomfortable cot next to me. She's incredibly strong and courageous. Maybe I should get her something special for her birthday... perhaps those diamonds she was eyeing the other day.

A week later I had my first follow-up and reviewed the final pathology report. The results were good: no metastasis. I was still sore and recovering, but getting better every day. Was I out of the woods yet? Mostly, yes. There's some concern that some cancer cells might have been left behind. The cancer had advanced between my initial biopsy and final pathology report, from a Gleason score of 4+3=7 to 4+5=9. Opting for surgery was the right call. If follow-up radiation is ever needed, it will be minimal and focused.

So why am I sharing all of this? It's not about seeking attention. I'm sharing this to shake a few people out of complacency. If you're reading this and have concerns, don't ignore them. Looking back, I realize there were warning signs I dismissed as mere aging. Those ads on TV promising miracle supplements? Ignore them. They should be against the law...! They almost cost me dearly. Ask yourself:

* Are you over 40?
* Do you have a family history of reproductive or pancreatic cancers?
* Have you noticed any changes or discomfort when sitting, using the restroom, or riding a bicycle?
* Any unusual discharge in your underwear?

If you answered 'yes' to any of these, see a doctor. Go now. Get a PSA test. If your doctor dismisses the need for it, ***find another doctor***. PSA tests do work. My PSA was only 7 (normal is 1 to 4), and my first urologist didn't think they would find anything. But here I am, post-prostatectomy. PSA tests are easy: a simple blood draw, and the results come back in a few days. If it's below 4, check it again in six months to ensure it hasn't risen. And if you're over 50, definitely get a direct exam.

Did you know the percentage of males with prostate cancer increases linearly with age? It does: 30% of males in their 30s have prostate cancer, 40% in their 40s, and so on. Recent studies have found this, and urologists are taking these findings seriously. Ignoring early warning signs is not worth your life.

Ignore those TV ads for miracle supplements. They’re a dangerous distraction. Many contain Saw Palmetto, which can suppress PSA levels and create a false sense of security. Instead of relying on these supplements, see a doctor.

Go get checked. Talk to a doctor. Do it now.

Finally, I want to thank my wife. I know this has been tough, but I'm glad you're here. I couldn't have done this without you. I love you.

The scale of the unfunded pension liabilities globally is almost incomprehensible. Hundreds of millions of people around the world expecting to retire comfortably will see their pensions worth pennies on the dollar or their currencies completely debased.

39. The rage:
Bitcoin journalism is fucked.

I started The Rage because I'm tired of investors and advertisers telling me what to do for below minimum wage compensation.

What we need are publications willing to let journalists investigate the crap out of the companies, representatives and people enabling the building of surveillance tech behind the scenes.

What we get are publications selling out to corporations, startups and politicians writing public relations puff pieces to keep their returns on track. The point of journalism is to hold power to account, not to become its bedfellow.

There is no lack of talented, experienced, investigative journalists covering bitcoin. The problem is that they write what the powers that be don't want you to hear – so many are out of a job, dabbling away at the next press release for mainstream media, or doing below-minimum wage contract work to pay the bills.

I'm incredibly overwhelmed by all the positive feedback we've been getting for The Rage. In just 8 weeks we've scooped major publications and drove discussions around AML, Samourai and Tornado Cash together with your help. We've even made enough to cover operations with almost 400$ raised, thanks to all the zappers out there.

But here's the thing. I didn't come here to write a good piece every once in a while leaving stories untold left and right because I can't afford to focus on investigations full time. I came here to fuck up the financial surveillance complex. That's why The Rage now needs your help.

We're trying to raise 0.25BTC so we can contract the best investigative journalists in the Bitcoin space to tell the stories that major publications can't afford to print.

People please do some UTXO management and whilst doing that buy some sats.

Bitcoin’s Unspent Transaction Outputs (UTXOs) can be classified into different segments based on their age.

UTXO Management for Dummies:
If everyone pays you in quarters you’ll have to lug around a big heavy bag. It’ll also cost you more time to spend as you have to count quarters when paying. So ask for $20s or $100s as payment, or change your quarters into bills from time to time.

Now I can hear you say...wtf is a UTXO?

A UTXO stands for unspent transaction output. Don’t worry about those unnecessarily complicated words. Just use “UTXO” and understand the concept of what it is…

I ask them all the questions I wish someone had asked me.

When I started my bitcoin journey, I had given up on the world. I had no car, no phone, and definitely no bank account.

I walked to work, rode my bike to work, or hitched a ride. And all the money that didn't go to rent or food went to Bitcoin.

I went from borderline homeless to retirement in 5 years. It was all or nothing. And I got it all!

If I can do it they can to. And they don't have to go as hard as I did to be very comfortable 5 to 10 years from now.

78. LN BITS CRITIQUE:
# Introduction

LNbits is a project plagued with poor code quality, potential security risks and bad management. What can be done about it?

# The problems

## Improper handling of vulnerability disclosures

### Case 1

Two years ago (don't remember exactly when, Twitter account deleted), I discovered an SQL injection vulnerability in LNbits. This could be exploited very easily by setting by sending the injected data in keys in the payload of most requests. (anyone could create create wallets)

This was possible due to the query to insert/update was generated using the body of the request, with basically no sanitization.

When I contacted Ben Arc about this, **the fix for this exploit was not implemented for several months**, and when it was, I do not recall there being an advisory for people to update.

### Case 2

A month or two ago, I had discovered an exploit that allows draining nodes completely under certain conditions. I had reported this to an active maintainer of the project, which had passed it on to the team. **The exploit has not been fixed.**

### Case 3

Again, a month or two ago, a flaw was discovered in the SatsDice extension that allowed anyone to drain wallets. I had investigated this, and found that the extension allows invoice keys (instead of admin keys only) to create dice that have a guaranteed win rate and return more sats than put in, and then use it to drain balances.

I had reported this to the team, and while it was fixed *a week or two later*, there was no easily visible for people to update except an "update your SatsDice extension" message in the LNbits chat buried in a conversation about the exploit.

## Bad security practices

### "Don't do one thing, and don't do it well"

LNbits has over time expanded its scope, from being a wallet layer to an LN apps platform to a node management tool. While this may seem great for users, it has come at a significant security cost:
- There is a larger attack surface for attackers to exploit.
- The newly introduced node management and admin UI feature allows easy draining of nodes if the admin URL was leaked, whether by by the autocomplete on the search bar or the user's history.
- All extensions run at the same privilege level as LNbits itself which has direct access to funds.

### Developers can accidentally shoot themselves in the foot

The LNbits codebase encourages many harmful development patterns that allows developers to easily create vulnerabilities that put funds at risk

#### Example 1

Most LNbits extensions use the following system for handling object creation/deletion:
- Take the body and convert it to a class
- Overwrite/sanitize fields in that class, such as preventing overwrite of the wallet ID
- Pass it to the DB to write

There is a slight problem: it can be easy to miss what to sanitize and what to not sanitize.

When you are doing an update request, you may accidentally forget to overwrite the wallet_id on the request sent by the user to update a withdraw link, and trust the user. You just created a bug to drain anyone's wallet given its ID, which LNbits does not consider sensitive information and sometimes requires you to share.

#### Example 2

LNbits treats any error during a payment attempt an error. But errors don't always happen due to failures in your request. Network connectivity is flaky, nodes restart, and way more reasons for there to be an error while the payment actually may be going through.

If you can get a way to trigger an error during a payment call, but also have it succeed, you can easlly drain a node. I have reasons to believe this is possible in production deployments.

This could easily be fixed as attempting to check the status of a payment after an error, and if that also fails, consider the payment pending until it can be checked, but ths has not been implemented.

## Bad project management

LNbits' current management suffers from many problems:
- the project suffers from feature and scope creep, implementing things for the sake of it
- bugs go unaddressed
- security is not a top priority

This is problematic for a project that deals with funds, as it is everything that you shouldn't be doing for a project meant to deal with funds. Tens of thousands of dollars in some cases and thousands in others.

# What can we do about it?

For me, I have disabled withdrawals on my LNbits instance.
I am also working on a replacement project called LNLocker that will solely focus on the wallet layer bit.

I would encourage trying to replace LNbits, as hard and sometimes impossible as it may be, or if you can, modify the code or restricting access via LND macaroons so that withdrawals cannot be made.

I highly recommend not exposing LNbits to the internet if you cannot disable withdrawals.

it can't be known for sure but the barge that took out the bridge in baltimore showed a couple of signs of possible electromagnetic induced problems, and there is a lot of heavy magnetic activity that is getting closer to the ground than normal lately

the barge's power went out, and then the exhaust started blowing dark smoke, both being signs of some kind of problem with the electrics of the engine and electrics on the ship altogether

it is just as possible it was a deliberate sabotage of the electrical system of the boat, or that it just was poorly maintained

the rest of this video is interesting just for how events and weather are showing a growing potential for massive electric grid failures, fortunately we are going into summer for most of the population but if the incursions of solar energy like this purple blob in the southeast of the USA become more frequent and happen while everything is freezing we could see some serious trouble

and you still have to wonder why they are making such extreme preparations for the solar eclipse next week

121. Cypherpunk:
Cypherpunks are the backbone of #bitcoin. Don't get it twisted.

Cypherpunk is someone who uses cryptography and related technologies in a rebellious or anti-establishment way to promote individual privacy and freedom.

The term "cypherpunk" combines the words "cipher" (code or cryptography) and "punk" (anti-authoritarian attitude). Cypherpunks advocate for the use of strong cryptography and decentralized systems to protect individual liberties and challenge state control over communications and transactions.

So a cypherpunk is essentially a tech-savvy individual or activist who leverages cryptography and related tools like encryption, anonymity networks, and decentralized platforms to circumvent censorship, surveillance, and other forms of centralized authority over digital spaces. The underlying philosophy is about using code and math as a form of civil disobedience and empowerment against oppressive systems.

ATTENTION CARNIVORES 🥩 : Nationally acclaimed Meat & Seafood Company Beck & Bulow is now accepting #Bitcoin onchain & Lightning payments both in store & online 🙌

They are accepting orders online & ship to all 50 states.

https://www.beckandbulow.com/

When I first found their butcher shop last summer, I asked to pay in BTC at checkout, because, on seeing the quality of their huge selection, I knew I would be ordering all my meat from them.

At the time, the team didn't have a good way to accept BTC, so...

we took a low-time preference approach.

Over the course of the next 8 months, the staff & I became good friends. I went to their carnivore meetup, we went shooting together, & I grabbed lunch with the owners to talk more about BTC infrastructure options for merchants.

Importantly, I never pressured them to do anything. We just kept the conversation rolling in person and over text. As time went on and BTC appreciated in price, their urgency grew.

Here is a testament to their conviction, they are not only accepting BTC, but...

#Bitcoin is now a cornerstone of their employee 401k plan. The company has committed to hold all payments made in BTC, online or in the store, indefinitely in cold storage.

Craziest of all, the company has put 20% of their treasury reserves into #Bitcoin 🤯

They began by selling meat door to door & at farmers' markets. A serendipitous series of events led to the co-founders acquiring a buffalo ranch in New Mexico.

Through proof of work their meats are now in over 1,000 restaurants & stores in New Mexico.

My challenge to you carnivores is to visit them online & give them a warm welcome to the #Bitcoin community by trying their amazing products!

Keep calm and HODL #Bitcoin.

Everyone seems to be overreacting to the Samourai arrests, the FBI PSA, and Phoenix leaving the US. Here's my attempt to break it down.

Samourai

You have to unpack all of the different elements. Could this be a state attack on self-custody and privacy? Maybe. Probably not.

There are a few components here that need to be evaluated on their own.

1⃣ Samourai was a self-custodial wallet
2⃣ Samourai was a mixer
3⃣ Samourai was providing normal people with privacy
4⃣ Samourai were knowingly marketing the service to criminals and flaunting that fact

Reading the charges, it seems like #4 is pretty cut and dry for this case. Their getting arrested for #4, doesn't automatically mean #1, #2, #3 are under siege as well. If Samourai was a taco stand laundering money and bragging about it, I'm sure they would be taken down too.

They may be accused of running a money transmitter now, but that may or may not stick. We'll find out in the trial.

All that said, we should always be vigilant to attempts to erode privacy and the ability to self-custody. It just does not seem that this fight is *that* fight.

FBI PSA

Seems pretty normal that the FBI would advise people to use compliant services, and the entire announcement seems to revolve around potential disruptions due to Samourai being taken down, and potentially others in the future. Given they took action, they have to post some bulletin about it.

Remember that when people lose funds or have funds stolen from them, they do go to the FBI for help. From their point of view, the best thing for people to do is use compliant services where they can potentially help.

The announcement concludes saying that services that purposely break the law will be investigated - so again we go back to #4 above. This is nothing new, and self-custody is not being criminalized.

Phoenix Leaving

As jack (npub1sg6…f63m) said, it's feels completely unnecessary. Phoenix obviously is not a MSB and they are not doing anything illegal. In my view, their exit from the US app stores is a complete overreaction.

Keep Calm

Could "they" come after wallets, developers, mixers, nodes, LSPs, sidechains, eCash, VPNs, encryption, etc? It's totally possible. But if you're not breaking the law, you have nothing to worry about.

To my knowledge, there is still rule of law in the US, property rights are still protected, and privacy is enshrined in the Bill of Rights (gladstein (npub1trr…hdpu)).

It would be very difficult to change the law or stretch it to incriminate these things because it's all just information and software, which is speech. Some will try. But as they are trying, #Bitcoin is becoming more and more mainstream and integral to the world's financial system.

#Bitcoin is freedom technology and it will continue on.

Go outside this weekend and think about why you're here.

#nostr #grownostr #plebchain

152. Full node importance:
A couple of things here to clarify the importance of full nodes:

First
----------------------------------
The concept and purpose of running a node is very much like the idea that everyone should be able to own a gun to defend liberty.
- It doesn't mean everyone will.
- It doesn't mean individuals can "fight off the government goons" with a handgun.
- It doesn't mean the state isn't more powerful than one person with their gun.
- It DOES mean that to conquer an entire nation of determined, gun owning people who want their liberty requires *active* and *direct* attack, because collectively enough people are armed that popular resistance actually stands a chance against tyrannical governments (who are naturally cowards)

The logic for anyone and everyone running a node who is capable is shockingly similar here.

Second:
----------------------------------
"Have we ever retroactively fixed a 5 year old "error" in the chain? No. Will we ever, no. Do you ever think, I wonder if that transaction from 2016 is still valid, I had better check?"

It isn't really about knowing that every transaction that other people are conducting is valid, it's about ensuring that *the #bitcoin you own* are REAL bitcoin. Bitcoins are created, are defined, and exist entirely and *solely* by a set of rules being followed for how they are created and how they are validly transferred. HALF of the supply of bitcoins was created prior to 2013. If you aren't confirming that the blocks that mined your coins into existence followed the rules, then you don't know if you are following an honest network.
--- The prime example here is Bitcoin Dark, which forked off and created 300K extra coins in the "privacy pool balance," then waited almost a year and a half to withdraw the from the privacy pool and since almost no one ran a full node, it went unnoticed except for a bitcoiner who actually ran full nodes for tons of forks out of curiosity and publicly posted when his node saw the bizarre transaction.
--- You could easily argue that no one needed to care about what happened 15 months ago on the chain... and every one of them was getting scammed specifically because they didn't.

IF we don't have the chain & valid link that traces all the way back to when your coins are created, you have abandoned the triple entry accounting breakthrough.

Third
----------------------------------
It isn't about simply making sure people can keep up with the chain when it comes to cost. It's also about ensuring *real* consensus is maintained (again requiring proof that the bitcoins being transferred are also real) across all borders, against any and all attackers, through any firewalls, on public and private networks, AND can recover after a disaster or massive failure on the network or in the software. Even if cheap SDDs are 50TB, if it takes 6 months to sync the chain, and there is either a direct attack, or a major bug that corrupts the data and forces a reset and sync-from-beginning on 60% of the nodes, that threatens the security and decentralization of the entire global monetary foundation for half a year *at best,* while what may be more likely is that having only 40% of the nodes, just becomes the new normal, and we never go back to the security we once had.

Last
----------------------------------
This is about securing the *trend* of decentralization indefinitely into the future.
It will require constant and deliberate attention and work to ensure it. We will have constant and recurring layers and degrees of centralization in the market, in the technology and hardware around it, in service provision, in some layer on top of Bitcoin that we become overly dependent on, AND on the base layer as costs rise and incentives to run nodes are low. But when an attack arises, when this centralization threatens the censorship resistance, or permission-less nature of the network, we will suddenly and aggressively remember how important it is to run nodes - and it will always be a part of any attempt at defending and repairing those critical re-centralization trends to run a full node, verify everything, and ensure the broadcast layer cannot be squeezed out of existence. That it can be reached to any and all participants no matter where they are in the world.

So the real question is:
Will this get *easier* to secure and protect in 5 years, or will it be *harder*? Because if it is harder, we have a problem, because how much security and decentralization do we lose exactly? 10%? 20%? What happens when we compound that every 5 years for another 50? If we have set it up to become more centralized in an irreparable way, slowly and incrementally, then that's the surest way to guarantee we end up on a system that only a handful of people run and who can dictate or defraud the whole world as to what is a "real" bitcoin and what isn't.

----------------------------------

There are a number of other nuances here because running (and communicating) a full node history isn't merely a problem of hard drive space, in fact, that's the least of the problems and the one that scales the best... while it is still a problem despite. The bigger problems are the computation, the RAM requirements, the speed of data indexing/recall/verification, the bandwidth to download and broadcast the information that is coming to-and-from the base layer, AND of course to then do all of the computation and verification of the *numerous* layers on top of it that we will have to use. Remember that layers themselves are just another trade off, and it's not as if they cost nothing to run. It is merely that they cost *less* to run than scaling on the base layer.

So in short,
you can't really make this short, so read the whole thing.

------------------------------------
Also, I actually kind of like your final argument and position on the "you don't even vote in your own republic" is pretty good, but I think it works *in support* of the full node argument, it doesn't replace it.

Stuck-up scientists like Richard Dawkins make me laugh; they’ll happily discredit religious beliefs as completely condescending, and yet the foundation of their own beliefs is grounded in a magic BANG…

Albert Einstein once said: "Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind."

This is absolutely true. Nobody has an absolute clue what is going on, yet people can’t see the beauty of it all. It leaves us with room for growth on an unprecedented scale. Unfortunately, many individuals are too closed-minded and are constrained in their own ideological cages. Belief is completely neutral and subjective; you can believe what you wish, but be wary of the danger that comes with it. You may be led down a road of belief systems which are enriched in ignorance.

If you truly believe something, you’re automatically precluded from believing in its opposite. This is pretty much where science goes wrong; they are awful at dealing with subjective experience, whereas religion is great at subjective experience but not so well with the objective part. People also need to realize the difference between believing in something and having faith in something… it’s a different ball game entirely.
