honestly with my return to reddit after a hiatus following the api changes, i barely read the comments anymore, and most of the ones i read are on circlejerk subs. most of it is slop. i have no clue when i started using reddit because i deleted my first few accounts but i remember using it on my hour-and-a-half commute home from high school so it's been a while. if you know the right subs, i think the site has actually gotten better since it started shrinking, but some places like r/196 are absolutely terrible these days

lemmy/kbin are also not good replacements for reddit for me. they almost were, but their community decided that every instance should have their own version of every subreddit, and that made it so much more fragmented. maybe one day i'll give it another shot if the culture gets better, but i find the corner of reddit i found more enjoyable to scroll
