At its peak, Twitter had 1/8 the number of active users as Facebook, WhatsApp, or Youtube.
A lot of folks who think the fediverse was created in 2022 are demanding the fediverse must turn into a clone of 2021 Twitter to attract the "masses," but I don't see many people demanding the fediverse become a clone of Facebook, WhatsApp, or Youtube.
I see a lot of "The Fediverse (which is Mastodon) must add quote posts, or you'll never be able to attract all the people who thought 2021 Twitter was the best possible social network!" (Ignoring that we already have quote posts on Akkoma and Misskey).
But I don't see a lot of "The fediverse (which is Mastodon) must add something like Facebook Groups, or you'll never be able to attract the people who think Facebook is the perfect social network!" (Ignoring that Friendica already has something like FB groups.)
...Why? Surely if one really believes that the only way forward is to imitate a popular social network to attract people who want that social network, you'd want to imitate the most popular one, not the 4th or 5th most popular one? Why are there so many ex-Twitter users who are completely convinced that the fediverse should be a Twitter clone, but so few ex-Facebook or ex-Youtube users who believe the fediverse should be a Facebook or Youtube clone?
