Arguably, a rail spur would do just as well as a parking lot, but that would require Iceland to build trains!

Admittedly, it's a low-density country, but from what I can figure, there is at least one high-traffic route (from Seyðisfjorður to Reykjavik) where a good deployment of electric rail would cut back substantially on both road-maintenance costs and petroleum imports.
