(It made me think of misophonia.)

The neurologist (must have been Sacks) did some tests aimed at finding where the problem happened, since her hearing was otherwise normal and she had no trouble with non-musical sound.

I don't remember the details, but my impression was that there was a very clear point where her brain decided a sound was musical and started shunting the audio input over to the music-processing part of her brain, which was broken in this very unpleasant way.

I have to think that there are other people who experience something like that, although perhaps not as severely.
