I boosted this first time it came around, but it's worth repeating for emphasis: the Tulare Lake in California, once the biggest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi in the USA, is BACK! And the Tachi Yokut Tribe, for whom the lake is central and sacred, want it to stay. Ever since the early 20th century, white farmers and authorities have been trying to keep it drained so they can farm the fertile soil in its dried-up bed. But restoring the lake would restore Tachi cultural heritage as well as the local ecology. There's plenty of farmland elsewhere.
The article is good and there is some excellent video of the lake, which is now almost as large as Lake Tahoe. Do check it out.
