I think one of the more pernicious manifestations of ableism in public health is when experts say "the science says the risk is low" and what they mean is "the science says the risk is low **FOR ME**".
This is, of course, the problem with public health: the modern worship of utility leads people to disregard suffering, as long as it falls beneath an arbitrary level of prevalence.
Whether that threshold is set at 1% of people or 25% of people impacted is political, not scientific.
