I wouldn't say it is proper to group my post with any sort of context that is casual.
For matters of state and national security - dedicated hardware + software should be used for doing any communications that are purely strategic or even tactical.
But this could broaden to any company or fren group that decides.
It is easier to modify a smartphone than brew a bunch of homemade devices. Probably more reliable too, so that would be my first approach.
You can't expect your friends to do it, if you're the comms and opsec guy, you get them to pony up cash and set the phones up yourself.
