I never thought "What the fuck" when watching this movie, the first time or any other time.

All I see is a kid who has an illness, who is scared and all alone, even though he is surrounded by people who care about him, because mental illness is scary and isolating, and is incredibly unique.

What is real to Donnie Darko is not real to any of the people he cares about or who care about him and it's just fundamentally lonely.
