Once 32-bit microcontrollers with good compiler support appeared, I only had to write assembly for startup and interrupt linkage. ARM Cortex-M even reduced the need for that. Now I write almost no assembly professionally, though I still occasionally write some for PIC 8-bit micros for personal projects.
