To be clear though, although this is a big flare & the 15th largest since 1996 according to Alex Young, it's a tiddler compared to the famous Carrington event of 1859, the bogeyman of all space weather fans.
That was estimated to be around an X45 flare & since the scale is in logarithmic in decibels (i.e. X10 is 10 x more powerful than X1), then the Carrington event was perhaps 4,000 x more powerful than today's flare.
Don't even ask about Miyake events ... 🙀
