npub1q2t0rcegc7kvxryj63dk6sqndmzzg82qjykttlymvcayrtn968fsphjr8a (npub1q2t…jr8a) More Things That Aren't True: That the myth of old-timey people believing the world was flat started in the 1940s.

"One glaring weakness, then, of the work as a historical biography, is perpetuating the myth that it was only the voyages of Columbus that finally convinced Europeans of his time that the Earth is not flat."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_History_of_the_Life_and_Voyages_of_Christopher_Columbus (From 1828)

And:
"Historian Jeffrey Burton Russell says the flat-Earth error flourished most between 1870 and 1920, and had to do with the ideological setting created by struggles over biological evolution."

(The genre of 'Books That Tell You Things You Always Believed Are Wrong But Which Are Also Full Of Wrong Beliefs About Those Other Beliefs" is surprisingly large. It gets back to, again "trusting trust". The authors of those books, to fill up pages, copy information that seems authentic and don't seek out primary sources. Then they become the source for someone else.)
