Been thinking the past couple of days about my use of social media, and specifically why i use it. I think my first instinct was to say entertainment because when i’m bored or have some downtime for even a moment, i reach for my phone. And while that is definitely a part of it, i think it’s also so much more. Definitelty a source of information of everything happening in the world, but also a feeling of community and connection with so many others.
But i think that may also be where i run into issues with social media because i want it to be a community, i want it to form friendships, but in my own personal experience, it tends to stay its own thing, and never really fully develop into anything real. A lot of relationships tend to be parasocial.
Then that starts bumming me out and i get mad at social media and feel the need to take breaks. I think i do well with social media when it’s just the media part of it (information gathering, entertainment, etc.), but not so much with the social part, because that never really feels real.
I do think with nostr, the community has felt the realest of any i’ve experienced in a long time. And while i haven’t been able to participate thus far, a lot of you have translated the experience to your real lives with conferences and meetups, etc., which feels authentic and just cool to me.
Not sure the point of this rambling, but just some thoughts on my mind…
