A truck driver in Auckland, New Zealand, was allegedly more than seven times the legal alcohol limit when he scraped the wall of Auckland's Waterview Tunnel multiple times during peak hour. The incident occurred on Thursday around 3:15 pm on the Southwestern Motorway (SH20). The truck was transporting a car and was headed northbound through the tunnel. The driver's poor driving caused the truck to scrape the wall on multiple occasions. The police caught up with the driver on the north-western motorway, State Highway 16, and were extremely concerned by his behavior as he brought the truck to a stop in live lanes during peak traffic. The driver, a 38-year-old man, was taken to Henderson Police Station, where a breath alcohol screening returned a result of 1872mcg, more than seven times the legal limit of 250mcg. He has been summonsed on a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol and is expected to appear in Waitākere District Court on July 31. Senior Sergeant Scott Cunningham expressed concern over the driver's actions, stating that driving a heavy vehicle under the influence of alcohol is a dangerous mix that could have resulted in serious injuries to himself or the wider public.
