21 years ago, on Mar 21, 2013, this detailed map of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), was created by ESA’s Planck space telescope.
The CMB is a relic of light from the Universe when it was just 380,000 years old. Before then, the Universe was filled with an opaque plasma of subatomic particles. Protons and electrons then joined to form hydrogen atoms, allowing light to travel free. Expansion of the Universe been stretched this light to microwave wavelengths.
