My experience is a little different to this author’s - my bilateral mastectomy, almost 12 months ago, was not due to cancer, but because of a long standing, expensive, and very frustrating health issue, which could not be resolved any other way. I also have a familial history (although not a close one) of breast cancer. I had a wonderful surgeon, in a regional Queensland city, who presented all the options, and was there for me when I needed follow up care. I chose to go #FlatAndFabulous. I have breast prostheses for when I feel like wearing boobs, but mostly I enjoy not bothering.
Occasionally I get stares. Occasionally, I get misgendered. Some brave people ask, and I choose what to tell. If I’m in a mood, I’ll say “WHAT? Where did they GO?! They were right here!”
