I think, for me, it's not about binning Kubler-Ross' approach but, rather, expanding it. (And Kubler-Ross herself wasn't thrilled with how her work was interpreted).
I don't see the stages as linear and I think it might be perceived, for some, as failure if they don't reach acceptance.
I had an online friend who used to beat herself up a lot that she was still grieving the loss of her father decades after his death and that she still hadn't accepted it.
