I think the ability to retain your Data is the most important aspect, i don't expect most people to go out and buy a server or use a VPS.

But here's the easy part

Use a hard drive
Use local only FOSS apps
To replace your propriety apps

Data transfer and syncing
Syncthing

Local send

Data hoarding

Portable SSD

All are easy to use and obtainable
