I fell for it first at first too, but it took me like an hour to find out that wasn't what happened. Most people are either too dumb or too lazy to actually bother to fact check anything. They just see a headline and go oh wow did you hear blah blah they don't even read the body of the story let alone go watch clips of things. There's an old episode of The Simpsons back when it was still good, where Bart is on a crowd of people and he gets everybody wound up and behind a certain issue by doing a bunch of different voice impressions in the crowd and throwing his voice. I always found it to be a really astute representation of how this stuff actually does happen in real life.
