Most would probably classify Iris DeMent’s songs as country music. But, I’m not a country music fan. DeMent is more sophisticated and liberal than most country artists. I don’t think her songs get much play time on country radio. I think of her as a folk music artist. Many have a hard time getting past her voice. But it has grown on me and I now adore it.

Iris DeMent wrote the closing song, “Our Town,” for the last episode of the Northern Exposure television series and “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” for the remake of the True Grit movie. She also wrote the politically challenging songs, “Wasteland of the Free,” and “How Long” based on a speech by MLK. She released an album, The Trackless Woods, which is only poems by the late Russian poet Anna Akhmatova set to music. I am a big fan and own several of her albums. I like all of them. But, Infamous Angel is probably her breakthrough and best known album.
