First there's that German habit of getting to the point on everything but undignified secrets, which is a real tonic compared to American TV, there's also the script which is deft, the clues are legion but not on a contextual plate, the cinematography is constantly excellent, and the soundtrack gives a doom laden catharsis, and there's an odd bleak, lovecraftian feel that almost extends into a life tempo.
