I'm certain that the NY Times (and lots of other news organizations) have internal rules requiring the use of "falsehoods" rather than "lies" when discussing Trump's lies.
There's no other explanation that makes sense.
But you'll never get news organizations to acknowledge this, because Big Journalism is one of the least transparent institutions you'll ever encounter.
