And even on the level of family, parents educating their children, violence is absolutely essential. Institutionalized violence is the foundation for our concept of family. And this violence has no theoretical justification, it is justified by denying it.
Like, my parents never hit me. But the violence they exercised was worse in a way because they made very clear that even though they themselves would not hit me, if I chose to run away the police would do the physical violence part and bring me back.
Without the threat of ... well.. actually killing me if I run away, my family couldn't have existed, because I would have just run away and tried to find another grown up to take care of me.
And this fundamental, omnipresent institutional violence can not be abstracted away from education. When you are talking to a child, you must not forget you are likely talking to a prisoner who is only talking to you because they are scared of you.
