I've been thinking about this all day. This is the best answer I could come up with:

I try to make familiar tropes new by giving them a tweak that satisfies the trope in a way the reader doesn't expect.

I try to make familiar the stories about regular people living fantastical lives. Some science fiction. Some fantasy. But not captains or rich people. Not people we think about when we think about agency.

Just people ... except for this one little thing...
