I zap things I appreciate:
- insightful posts
- good memes
- bad memes
- friends who bothered to reply
- donate

I sometimes get zapped for the same points, maybe except insightful posts 😅

And sometimes zaps are a way to transact if other means are harder at a given moment, eg. I don't have the guy's invoice or bolt12, I can just zap the profile.
