Tariffs always sound good at first. “We’re protecting American jobs! We’re standing up to foreign competition! We’re making other countries pay!” But here’s the truth: tariffs aren’t paid by foreign governments. They’re paid by businesses and consumers—by us.
Now, the U.S. is hitting China, Canada, and Mexico with new tariffs. Canada immediately slapped 25% tariffs on American goods. Mexico is getting ready to respond. China is going to the WTO and will likely retaliate. And what does that mean? Higher costs for companies, higher prices for consumers, and more headaches for anyone who relies on global supply chains (which, these days, is almost everyone).
The last time the U.S. went down this road, it didn’t end well. Trump’s first-term tariffs disrupted manufacturing, forced companies to pay more for raw materials, and didn’t bring back the jobs he promised. Farmers had to be bailed out. Prices went up for everything from washing machines to cars. And yet, here we are again.
Tariffs aren’t some magic weapon against foreign economies.
