Fraser Cain on Nostr: Astronomers are constantly searching for new ways to measure distance in the Universe ...
Astronomers are constantly searching for new ways to measure distance in the Universe via parallax, Cepheid variables, Type 1a supernovae, and the cosmic microwave background radiation. Astronomers have developed a new method of measuring distance using red giant stars. As main-sequence stars reach the red giant phase of evolution, they have acoustic oscillations in their atmosphere, which can be matched to their age. This enables a new way of measuring their distance.
