While Godot was struggling with lots of materials, i looked for some information and saw that Godot was capable of handling quite a bunch of polys without issues.
That made me remember a star citizen talk about mid poly that is no longer available.
That would allow us to create soft edges using bevels and weighted normals for hero assets without the necessity to bake high poly assets.
