Netflix's premium tier is a pretty good indication of how expensive a sustainable streaming subscription needs to be without ads (and that's even including the fact that Netflix's service is comparatively stateless and non-real-time, which all translates into "cheap”).

The fact that consumers are already habituated to ads interjecting into their video content makes it a self-sustaining optimum for the industry.
