The ban cuts out the arguing and having to 'catch' them at it. I've seen a kid refuse to take her phone out of her pocket (was offered to put it in her locker, on the teachers' desk, in the principal's safe...) during final exams in her graduating year. Yes, she preferred not graduating to being separated from her phone. This was about ten years ago. It's gotten worse.

Our school now has pouches that are locked until unlocked with a magnet at the end of the day. We still have a few that either bring old, dead phones to put in the pouch or tell us they don't have their phones, but there are only a few and they eventually do get caught and sent to the office.
