Hawthorn apparently is one of the best trees/shrubs to support many species -
flowers, berries and protection.
Having sad that, I should stress that I hate doing maintenance on hawthorn hedges. The thorns penetrate all sorts of protective gloves and wounds easily get inflamed.
If you're looking for something evergreen, I'd plant yew (female and male plants). Birds love the berries. Greenfinches and lesser whitethroat regularly nest in our yew hedges. Make sure to wear gloves and goggles when trimming as everything about yew is poisonous.
Our mixed hedge consisting of cherry, oak, hawthorn, blackthorn, rowan, rosa rugosa, hazel and some more species is very popular with all wildlife.It needs some maintenance though.
